Key Steps in the Extraction Process

Step 1: Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction
Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction uses pressurized carbon dioxide to extract cannabinoids and terpenes from plant material. This highly selective and controllable process allows manufacturers to target specific compounds (such as CBD) for extraction.

Step 2: Winterization - Refining the Crude Oil
The initial extract contains plant fats, waxes, and lipids that must be removed. This refining process is called winterization.

Winterization Process:

1.Mix with ethanol: The crude extract is mixed with 200-proof ethanol and stirred thoroughly.

2.Freeze: The mixture is placed in a freezer overnight. The low temperature causes unwanted fats and waxes to solidify.

3.Filtering: The solids are removed using a Büchner funnel or a similar filtration system.

4.Evaporating ethanol: The filtered solution is heated to evaporate the ethanol, leaving behind pure oil. The recovered ethanol can be reused for subsequent batches.

Step 3: Short-Path Distillation
To isolate CBD and further refine the extract, short-path distillation is used. This technique separates compounds based on their boiling points.

Short-Path Distillation Steps:

1.Heat the oil: The winterized oil is gradually heated.

2.Separate compounds: Each compound is collected separately as it evaporates at its specific boiling point.

3.Isolate CBD: The final product is a highly purified oil suitable for various applications.
