Plant extraction separates specific active compounds from raw plant materials. These extracted compounds are widely applied in the pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, and essential oil industries. The selection of extraction equipment is determined by the adopted extraction method, raw material properties and final product requirements. 1. Macerators
Macerators are used to grind and shred plant materials. The crushing process increases the specific surface area of raw materials, which significantly improves extraction efficiency. This type of equipment includes both manual and automated models, with typical examples such as commercial blenders and material grinders.
2. Solvent Extractors
Solvent extractors adopt food-grade or industrial solvents including ethanol, hexane and purified water. The solvents fully dissolve active ingredients in plants and separate target compounds from solid plant residues. Supporting auxiliary equipment is equipped for different process requirements:
Rotary evaporators: Remove residual solvents after extraction to obtain highly concentrated plant extracts.
Soxhlet extractors: Classic laboratory and small-scale production equipment that realizes continuous solvent circulation and repeated extraction of plant samples.
Supercritical fluid extractors (SFE): Adopt supercritical CO₂ as the extraction medium, which is especially suitable for extracting high-purity essential oils and thermally sensitive delicate substances.
3. Steam Distillation Units
Steam distillation units are professional equipment for plant essential oil extraction. Steam penetrates plant materials to vaporize essential oil components. A complete set of equipment consists of a steam boiler, distillation flask, condenser and separatory funnel. The boiler generates high-temperature steam, the distillation flask holds plant raw materials, the condenser cools oil-gas vapor into liquid state, and the separatory funnel finally collects and separates essential oil distillates.
4. Cold Press Machines
Cold press machines extract plant oils through pure physical mechanical pressing without high-temperature heating. They are widely used for oil extraction from seeds, fruits and peels, especially suitable for citrus fruits and olives. Common types include hydraulic presses and screw presses.
5. Ultrasonic Extractors
Ultrasonic extractors utilize ultrasonic vibration waves to impact and agitate plant cells, which breaks cell wall structures and releases internal essential oils and bioactive compounds into the solvent. This extraction process is efficient and fast, and effectively protects delicate active ingredients from damage.
6. Vacuum Concentrators
Vacuum concentrators work in a low-pressure vacuum environment to remove solvents at low temperatures. The low-temperature working condition perfectly protects heat-sensitive active compounds, and they are commonly used for post-treatment of liquid extraction and distillation products.
7. Filtration Equipment
Filtration equipment is mainly used to separate solid plant residues from liquid extracts to purify crude extraction products. Filter presses are applicable for large-scale industrial production, while membrane filters can achieve finer filtration and higher product purity.
8. Centrifuges
Centrifuges separate target extracts from plant residues and remove tiny impurities based on density differences of substances. High-speed centrifuges are widely used for the purification of plant extracts and suspensions due to their high separation precision.
9. Rotary Evaporators (Rotavap)
Rotary evaporators remove residual solvents under reduced pressure and low-temperature conditions, which can effectively avoid active ingredient deterioration and obtain clean, high-purity extracts. They are standard supporting equipment after solvent extraction and distillation processes.
10. Lyophilizers (Freeze Dryers)
Lyophilizers realize solvent and water removal through vacuum sublimation without high-temperature heating. The equipment first freezes plant extracts completely, then makes internal water sublimate in a vacuum environment, which maximally retains the activity of heat-sensitive compounds.
11. Hydrodistillation Units
Hydrodistillation units share similar working principles with steam distillation equipment, but directly take purified water as the extraction medium. They are the preferred equipment for extracting essential oils from flowers, herbs and plant seeds.
12. Enzyme Extractors
Enzyme extractors use specific biological enzymes to degrade plant cell walls, thereby fully releasing intracellular bioactive compounds. This technology is widely applied in fruit and vegetable processing, with mature applications in the food and beverage industry.
In general, the selection of plant extraction equipment depends on three core factors: plant material type, target extract ingredients and production scale (laboratory test, small pilot or industrial mass production).
