Three Basic Methods for Extracting Active Ingredients from Medicinal Plants

Method 1: Ultrasonic-Assisted Extraction


Steps:

1.Sample Preparation: Grind the medicinal plant material into particles of appropriate size.

2.Solvent Addition: Mix the sample with a suitable organic solvent (such as ethanol or methanol) in a specific ratio.

3.Ultrasonic Extraction: Place the sample solution in an ultrasonic extractor for assisted extraction. The ultrasonic waves accelerate solvent penetration into the plant cells, breaking down the cell walls and releasing the active ingredients.

4.Filtration and Concentration: Filter out solid waste using filter paper or a membrane to obtain a solution. The solution is then concentrated to the desired volume using a rotary evaporator or another method.

5.Purification and Isolation: If needed, the extracted solution can be further purified and separated using methods such as chromatography or thin-layer chromatography to obtain higher-purity active ingredients.

 

Method 2: Supercritical Fluid Extraction


Steps:

1.Sample Preparation: Grind the medicinal plant material into particles of appropriate size.

2.Supercritical Fluid Extraction: Place the sample in a supercritical fluid extractor (commonly using carbon dioxide as the supercritical fluid), then adjust the temperature and pressure for extraction. Supercritical fluids have low viscosity and high permeability, allowing efficient extraction of the active ingredients.

3.Separation and Recovery: Separate and recover the dissolved active ingredients from the supercritical fluid through methods such as reduced-pressure evaporation and condensation.

4.Concentration and Purification: Concentrate the active ingredient solution to the desired level using a rotary evaporator. Further purification and separation can be performed using chromatography or thin-layer chromatography to obtain highly pure active ingredients.

 

Method 3: Traditional Extraction


Steps:

2.Sample Soaking: Mix the sample with a suitable solvent (e.g., water or ethanol) in an appropriate ratio and soak. The soaking time and solvent ratio can be adjusted to improve extraction efficiency.

3.Filtration and Concentration: After soaking for the specified time, filter out solid waste using filter paper or a membrane to obtain a solution. The solution is then concentrated to the desired volume using a rotary evaporator or another method.

4.Purification and Isolation: If necessary, the extracted solution can be purified and separated using methods such as chromatography or thin-layer chromatography to obtain higher-purity active ingredients.
